Sandy
Stewart bled the majority of our young players in today's game
at Recreation Park in Alloa, they took a little time to knit
together but when they did things looked good. Several plays
in and around the box broke down before we managed to even shoot
and Alloa looked comfortable and secure for the biggest majority
of the first half. It was a touch of class from Stephen McKeown
and Willie McLaren that finally open up the defence.
On the edge of the box Stephen put through a low pass that found
Willie sprinting in from the wing. He struck it sweetly, but
when the keeper stuck out his hand it looked as though the ball
would spin wide. Luckily it didn't and the ball bounced in to
the net. The Alloa keeper should be praised for even getting
to the ball.
The first half continued as both teams tried to attack Alloa
looking for the equaliser and Airdrie looking to continue our
dominance.
Trialist goal keeper Craig Samson had not really been tested
in the first half but his organising the defence seemed to keep
them focussed on the job at hand.

In
the sweltering heat, Sandy chose not to make any changes.
It took maybe thirty minutes for Airdrie United to get our second
goal, a carbon copy of the first with a touch of McLaren thrown
in. Once again Stephen McKeown played the through ball for Willie
McLaren to chase on to. This time with a defender in front of
him Willie had to half volley the ball over his shoulder before
slamming the ball in to the back of the net.
The main threat from Alloa seemed to come through Jose Quintongo,
but it was the final ball that always seemed to let them down.
A few occasions when a direct shot would have been more effective
they tried to do some thing flash giving McKenna or McManus
time to clean up.
With the addition of David Dunn in the second half, replacing
Stephen Mcdougal, Airdrie switched to a 4-3-3
formation allowing McLaren to use his pace going forward.
Airdrie's
United could have made it three through Neil McGowan, his effort
crashed off the bar in 69 minutes.

McLaren Makes it two with a great piece of skill. |
The
third and final goal came at the tail end of the second half.
From an Alloa corner, the Airdrie United defence cleared our lines
and Frazer Coyle gave chase, beating two Alloa defenders to the
ball he continued his run in to the Alloa side of the pitch. As
he began to run in to some trouble David Dunn sprinting up the
park screamed for the ball, Coyle dually put the ball in his path
and all David had to do was beat the keeper and find the back
of the net. Putting the ball across the face of the goal he made
it three nil and the game was over.
