Airdrie
United travelled to Cliftonhill expecting a tough battle from
our Third Division neighbours and although it was a friendly
the game had some meaty challenges. Albion Rovers started brightly
and had the majority of the possession in the opening moments
of the game, a few corners that didn't trouble trialist goalkeeper
Craig Samson.
Our first goal came in a sweeping attack, after some fine play
in the mid-field by Airdrie United that Combined Stephen McKeown,
Brian McPhee and Willie McLaren Airdrie United finally opened
a gap for David Dunn to rifle a shot at goal; it flew in the
back of the net giving the Rovers keeper no chance. We could
have had a few more after the first Willie McLaren could have
had the second after chasing what seemed like a lost cause,
he shot flew along the goal line and bounced out, off of the
cross bar.

Sandy
made some changes at the start of the second half, Gary Twigg
replaced Mark Roberts and Lee Hollis came on to replace Craig
Samson. Once again Albion Rovers started off on top but ran out
of steam pretty quickly. Our passing game in the mid-field kept
us in control but we just didn't seem to dominate them as much
as we could have. Our second goal came as Gary Twigg sent a cross
ball across the face of the goal to the near post, Willie McLaren
was on call to place the header in to the net. Stephen McDougal
then came on to replace Willie McLaren and Alex McColl was brought
on to oversee the right back position in place of Frazer Coyle. |
Our third and final goal came when
some passing play found Gary Twigg in a little space, once again
Stephen McKeown played the final ball that opened the Rovers defence,
on the edge of the Albion box, the easy the option would have
been to hit the shot first time, instead Gary knocked it by the
last defender and picked his spot in the back of the net.
The final word has to go to Brian McPhee from the sublime to the
ridiculous. All evening he had been tormenting the Rovers defence
and deserved a goal for all his hard word. So his chance would
come, A cross ball from the near corner saw Brian McPhee strike
a bicycle kick that rattled of the near post, shots like that
you see once in a blue moon and generally never get as close as
this. Next a cross from Gary Twigg let Brian in acres of space
and the keeper in no mans land the resultant header was sent by
the far post when it would have been far easier to score.
