Match Report

Airdrie United Under 17s produced a spirited fight back during the second half to come from 3-1 down to win the game 5-3 thanks to a goal from Brian Henderson and two goals from man of the match Christopher Purvis and two goals from substitute Tony Watt.

First Half

Clyde started the game quickest and during the 4th minute of it had the first chance when they hit a shot from inside the box but Daniel Tobin made the save. A minute later Clyde won a penalty and from it Kevin Higgins placed the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the net to give Daniel Tobin who had guessed the correct way no chance. Clyde hoped to build on there lead and on the 11th minute doubled it with the next chance as from a low cross into the box Jack Sloss placed the ball into the bottom corner of the net to increase the lead.

Clyde continued to keep up the pressure on Airdrie and on the 13th minute Calum Reid hit a shot from the top of the box but it went just wide and five minutes later from a long throw into the box David Brown headed the ball clear to the top of the box however a Clyde player was there and he hit a shot on the volley but it went wide. Then on the 20th minute Clyde hit a shot from about 20 yards out but it rattled the bar and went over and shortly after this Jack Sloss hit a shot from the top of the box but his shot also went wide. Two minutes after this Stephen Gray had a go from about 20 yards out but his effort went wide.

Our Young Diamonds had to wait until the 25th minute for there first chance and it came for Brian Henderson when he hit a shot from inside the box but Clyde goalkeeper Christopher Tennent turned it around the post for a corner and from the corner no danger was caused. A few minutes later Clyde had another chance when Jack Sloss hit a shot from about 20 yards out but Daniel Tobin made the save and shortly after this from a cross into the box Rhys Minnock hit a shot from inside the box but his shot went over the bar.

Airdrie was to have the next three chances in the half and on the 31st minute Christopher Purvis had the first of these when he hit a shot from about 25 yards out but Christopher Tennent made the save and a few minutes later Christopher Tennent made a save from an Adam Shaw shot from a free kick about 30 yards from goal. Then on the 35th minute our Under 17s had another chance when Gary Collins played the ball into Brian Henderson who was inside the box and Brian had a look up before drilling the ball into the bottom corner of the net to bring Airdrie back into the game. Clyde responded to this by having the final two chances of the half but from both shots Daniel Tobin made saves and Airdrie headed into half time a goal behind.

Second Half

Airdrie had the opening chance of the half on the 47th minute when they won a free kick about 20 yards from goal as from it Craig Rankin hit a shot but it went over the bar. Four minutes later Clyde won a corner and had there first chance of the half as from it the ball was crossed into the box and only headed clear to Andrew Quail and he drilled a shot through a ruck of players and into the net to increase Clyde’s lead. Six minutes after this Andrew Quail had another chance for Clyde on the 57th minute when he hit a powerful shot from about 25 yards out but it went just over the bar.

On the 59th minute our Young Diamonds made there first substitution as Paul Hewitt came on for Trialist Greg McBride and two minutes later Paul was involved as from a low cross into the box he just missed the ball but it fell to Christopher Purvis and he placed a shot into the bottom corner of the net to start the Airdrie fight back. Before the game restarted Airdrie made a substitution which would have a big impact on the game as top Goalscorer Tony Watt came on for Trialist Ashim Burungu. Then on the 66th minute Airdrie won a corner and had a chance as from it the ball was crossed to the back post where Allan Longmuir was and he hit a shot but it was parried away by Christopher Tennent and his defence cleared the danger.

Airdrie was to continue putting Clyde under pressure and on the 67th minute they equalized as from a cross into the box the ball was not cleared properly by the Clyde defence and it fell to Christopher Purvis and he hit a shot which took a deflection and went flying into the net for his second goal of the game. Shortly after the goal Paul Hewitt was yellow carded and on the 74th minute Airdrie made another substitution as Trialist Mark Little came on for Brian Henderson. It was Clyde who had the next chance though as Christopher Ferguson one of there Trialists hit a shot from about 20 yards out but it went well wide.

Both teams were searching for a winner and on the 77th minute Airdrie had the next chance when they won a corner as from it Trialist Ross McEntee crossed the ball into the box and an unmarked Gary Collins hit a shot but it went over the bar and before the game restarted our Under 17s made there final substitution as Steven Kelly came on for Trialist Ross McEntee. Three minutes later intelligent play by Christopher Purvis led to him playing Tony Watt through on goal instead of shooting from a good position and this led to Tony Watt firing a shot into the net to give Airdrie the lead. Both teams were to have one more chance before full time and on the 84th minute our Young Diamonds had there chance when Tony Watt was played through on goal again and this time he placed a shot by Christopher Tennent and into the net to make it 5-3 and for his second goal of the game. Clyde had one final chance to get a goal back on the 87th minute when they won a free kick about 20 yards from goal as from it Ross McKinnon hit a shot but Daniel Tobin made the save and our Under 17s won the game 5-3 to make it two league wins in a row.
