Airdrie came within seconds of climbing off the bottom of the bottom table at Palmerston yesterday following a spirited performance against Queen of the South.
An injury time equaliser from David Weatherston earned Queens a share of the points in a match that Airdrie dominated for long periods.Airdrie had been in front from the 50th minute of the game following a Ricky Waddle strike which added to a first half equaliser from Scott Gemmill. Queens had been in front following a Derek Holmes strike.
From the off Airdrie took the game to Queen of the South and showed a hunger and determination that has been seen in recent weeks as the team battle to avoid automatic relegation. Scott Gemmill had a couple of efforts before Scott Fox pulled off a great one-handed save to stop a Scott McLaughlin volley. With the game being played in Queens half it a blow when against the run of play, Derek Holmes bundled Queens in front on 13 minutes. With a tremendous vocal backing from the visiting Airdrie fans urging the team back into the game, Airdrie hit back three minutes from the interval when Scott McLaughlin's cross from the right found Gemmill, who had time to drill a low shot past Fox. The second half was only five minutes old when Kenny Black's side took a deserved lead. Scott Gemmill turned provider this time and a great through ball found Ricky Waddle in space before he turned a played the ball past Fox. A great run then from John Baird saw his effort agonisingly rebound off the inside of the post. With the game deep into added time Airdrie were dealt a hammer blow when substitute Weatherston knocked the ball home from close range leaving us bottom of the league, one point behind Ayr United, with two games left to play. The trip to Kirkcaldy on Monday night will see the Diamonds with another chance to lift themselves off the bottom of the Division.
