A Wullie McLaren goal 2 minutes from time was enough to see Queens secure the 3 points in a game of few opportunities. With the game heading for a goaless draw it was the ex-diamond who popped up at the back post to take advantage of a Derek Holmes pass.
Airdrie had the lions share of the play in the 1st period without really troubling the Queens goalie Hutton, although Diarmuid O'Carroll was unlucky to see his header ending just over the bar as he and Scott Gemmil rose to head together. Ricky Waddell then went close but this time his header went just wide.
The 2nd half was a similar affair and but for a sliced back pass from Smyth, Stephen Robertson was not troubled until the final minutes when he picked McLarens effort out from the back of the net. Airdrie: Robertson; Storey, Smyth, Donnelly, Lovering; Trouten, McCann, McLaughlin, Waddell; O'Carroll, Gemmill (Baird 45). Subs not used: Parratt, McDonald, Keegan, Hollis(gk). Queens: Hutton; McKenna, Lilley, McAusland, Hamill; McLaren, McMillan, Quinn, Burns (McParland 79); Weatherston (Kean 70), O'Connor (Holmes 53). Subs not used: Scally, Fox(gk). Referee: David Somers. Attendance: 825.
