A second half strike from Scott Gemmell saw Airdrie in to the 2nd round of the Co-opearative Insurance Cup.
His strike in the 67th minute secured the 1-0 win over local rivals Albion Rovers in a game with few goalscoring opportunities. The win will be a great confidence boost for Jimmy Boyle's young squad ahead of next weeks opening league fixture. The draw for the next round will be made on Friday 6th August.
Airdrie had the most of the possession in the 1st period but with the exception of an opportunity for Tony Watt midway through the half when he went through one on one with Rovers keeper Galston but failed to get a shot away, no other notable chances were created. The 2nd half was a similar affair and it always looked likely that one goal would decide the tie and Gemmil's strike proved decisive. The second period also saw both sides reduced to 10 men when Airdrie's Muir received a 2nd yellow before Rovers Canning followed with 8 minutes of the game remaining.
